Plaque is a bacteria that forms on the surface of the teeth, this bacteria is left unchecked is what causes gingivitis.

What is gingivitis? It is an inflammation of the gums, caused by a bacterial or plaque. It is the major cause of tooth loss in adults if left untreated.
Causes of gingivitis: particles of food trapped in the spaces between the tooth and gum known as sulcus causes infection if not properly cleaned.

- smoking or chewing tobacco
- diabetes
- crooked teeth
- pregnancy
- genetic factors
- dental appliances that fit poorly
- broken fillings
Symptoms of gingivitis
- Tender, or swollen gum
- Bleeding of gum when brushing or flossing of teeth
- Loose teeth
- Sensitive and painful teeth while eating
- Partial dentures that no longer fit
- Foul-smelling breath that doesn’t go away after you brush your teeth
